Pekutherm and Grünstoff enter into Recycling Alliance for Plastics

Further expansion of disposal and recycling concepts for even more sustainability

Geisenheim / Frankfurt am Main, July 28, 2022 – Pekutherm, a company specializing in the recycling of high-quality plastics such as acrylic glass or polycarbonate, is taking a stake in Grünstoff Kunststoff-Recycling GmbH. The alliance of the two experts for recycling management ensures a further expansion of disposal and recycling concepts for thermoplastics.

“The market for raw materials is tight. The plastics processing industry, the retail trade or exhibition stand construction – all sectors where large quantities of plastic waste are generated – are dependent on coherent and easy-to-integrate concepts. At the same time, through the cooperation, we ensure the security of supply of the plastics processing industry with high-quality and unmixed recycling raw materials,” says Heiko Pfister, Managing Director of Pekutherm.

Pekutherm’s cooperation with Grünstoff will further expand the company’s specialization in the high-quality materials acrylic glass (PMMA) and polycarbonate. At two production sites, more than 50 employees now process plastic scraps from PMMA, PC, PETG, PP, PE, PVC and other thermoplastics with a capacity of more than 10,000 tons per year.

Two experts under one roof

Pekutherm has been in the plastics recyclates business for more than 30 years – a market that has grown steadily in recent years. With Ecobox, the company offers a simple way to collect material directly on site with space-saving transport boxes in key industries where plastic offcuts, scraps and waste material are generated.

“Grünstoff and Pekutherm are a great fit. We both have the ambition to manufacture our products in such a way that they meet the quality specifications of the primary product, but at the same time conserve scarce resources and significantly improve the carbon footprint. In addition, using a recyclate in production saves a significant amount of energy. Therefore, our close alliance in purchasing, processing and quality management as well as sales is a strategic decision for even more sustainability in the plastics industry,” explains Robel Goitom, Managing Director of Grünstoff. Above all, the joint logistics in purchasing and the subsequent single-variety processing of the two companies will go hand in hand in the future in order to be able to offer recyclate customers optimum delivery conditions. Proximity to customers is also increasing.

International expansion

The Pekutherm site in Geisenheim also offers enormous storage capacity, which can be rented by plastics processors on request as intermediate storage for delivery-on-demand. The strategic cooperation resulting from Pekutherm’s entry into Grünstoff is also to be further expanded internationally. “It is still the case worldwide that high-quality plastics such as acrylic glass or polycarbonate end up to a large extent in incineration plants or are even simply exported as waste. As a result, our own economy suffers a loss and has to buy raw materials at a high price. Our recyclates meet the highest standards and can be extruded directly as granules – in a quality that is almost on a par with the primary product,” says Heiko Pfister from Pekutherm. Sustainable circular economy for PMMA (acrylic glass, Plexiglas), PC (polycarbonate) and other thermoplastics should therefore generally be an industrial focus. By recycling high-quality thermoplastics, an active contribution is made to climate protection and resource efficiency.

About Pekutherm

Pekutherm is Germany’s leading recycling company for acrylic glass (PMMA) and has developed a sustainable recycling cycle for the material. Sorting and subsequent processing produces a high-quality raw material that is available for new PMMA products. With its own Ecoboxes, which are placed at plants where PMMA residues or old products accumulate, Pekutherm takes the first step towards a new life for the plastic product. In the plant, the product is processed into granules according to type. The raw material thus obtained enables environmentally friendly and resource-saving new components.

About Grünstoff

Grünstoff has been one of the fastest growing companies in the field of recycling since its foundation in 2019. Through individual on-site consulting and a large as well as international supplier and customer network, Grünstoff offers interesting disposal concepts and high-quality recyclates especially for polycarbonate (PC). The management brings a lot of experience in this field and is internationally known through previous ventures in the industry.
